Osamelá Päťka * A Lonely Five

A lonely Five was strolling alone in the neighbourhood.
Today she was especially lonesome. At school she was not popular at all and therefore nobody ever wanted to play with her. One and Two never played with her, Three very rarely and Four only did when Three's mom declared house-arrest for one reason or another.
Päťka si sadla na lavičku a tichúčko plakala. Išla okolo pani učiteľka matematiky a spýtala sa: Five sat down on a bench and wept secretly. Suddenly the math teacher went by and asked:
- Päťka, prečo plačeš, niekto ti ublížil? - Five, why are you crying, did anyone hurt you?
- Nikto ma nemá rád, Jednotka a Dvojka sa so mnou nehrajú nikdy, Trojka veľmi málo a Štvorka iba vtedy, keď Trojka nesmie na dvor. - Nobody likes me, One and Two never play with me at all, Three very rarely and Four only does when Three's mom forbids her to go out.
- Oh yes, you know, nobody likes fives, but they are very important nevertheless. Can you imagine there were no fives? How could they give back small change if you bought an ice cream for 15 crowns and paid with a twenty-crown banknote? How would John's parents learn that he forgot to do his homework?*
Five gave it a second thought and had to admit that the teacher was right. She smiled and went to play with another Five. They played the division game until sunset. One Five pretended she was Two plus Three and the other posed as One plus Four. It was a game for older numbers only and they had a lot of fun at it.
* In the countries of Central Europe, a numerical grade sequence (1-5) prevails, unlike Britain or the USA, where letters A-F are used for this purpose.
